'PETA is lying': Ontario animal trainer fires back at 'zealots,' denies mercilessly whipping tiger

Warning: To a higher place video contains graphic language

A prominent Ontario animal trainer is denying allegations of corruption afterward startling footage emerged Tuesday that appeared to show him whipping and blasphemous at a tiger.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a volunteer to the Bowmanville Zoo to secretly film a grooming session with Michael Hackenberger, who has trained tigers for Hollywood productions like the Life of Pi. PETA posted a short clip of that session this calendar week, saying it showed Hackenberger "viciously whipping" a young tiger roughly 20 times as it lay on its dorsum.

But Hackenberger said the footage was taken out of context.

"PETA, once again, is lying," Hackenberger said, in a 31-minute video response posted online. "They're zealots and all they want to exercise is go their perverted, twisted message out in that location."

Hackenberger said the had tiger disobeyed him by jumping on the edge of the training band, and he whipped it twice to "get him turned around." Just he said the 20 lashings afterwards actually hit the basis, non the tiger, who was defiantly lying on its back.

"What I was trying to do was frighten the tiger, absolutely, to become him up," he said. "Possibly I viciously whipped the basis, mayhap I viciously whipped the air. But I did non viciously whip that tiger."

He said he also whipped the tiger's paw afterward in the session, because information technology tried to swipe at another trainer.

Hackenberger challenged the animal rights group to release all its footage from the grooming session last week. A PETA spokesperson told the National Postal service Wednesday it wouldn't release whatsoever more than footage publicly, but had provided the full video to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA).

"The video footage does not lie," said Brittany Peet, PETA'southward deputy director of captive animal law enforcement. "This was a tiger who was cowering on his back."

The OSPCA confirmed that an investigation is underway, but would not annotate farther.

PETA said it grew concerned about Hackenberger and his zoo, 70 kilometres due east of Toronto, later on he was caught on live Toronto TV swearing at a baboon that was riding a pony during a segment for Breakfast Boob tube. In the prune, Hackenberger'southward microphone recorded him calling the baboon a "c–k due south—-r" later on it roughshod off the pony.

In the PETA video, Hackenberger is also heard swearing at the tiger.

"PETA's new video footage confirms that this is a pattern of behavior Hackenberger has towards animals," PETA said in a statement.

"My language is atrocious, and I apologize for that," Hackenberger said in his response. "Unfortunately I accept bad language, I'g not proud of it. I've had problems with this in the past."
